Aging, Long Term Care Environments and Dementia
Goals and Objectives of the Course
The subject of aging and the influence of long term care and it's
affect on the quality of life among the aging population has needed
attention for quite some time.
As a Gerontologist, an owner/administrator of a long term care facility
for the elderly and a CE vendor for RCFE, ARF and RN practitioners,
I have received feedback that there is a desperate need to provide
accurate, unbiased and practical advice on this and other related
subjects to those in the counseling professions. Most importantly,
students are interested in hearing this information from a professional
practicing in the field.
Keeping the above in mind, the mission of this course is to first
identify and define common terminology specific to the field of
aging. As most health care fields, the field of elder care and long
term care are laden with a massive amount of jargon. This jargon
is responsible for confusing the already compromised client and
their family, making it difficult to make an informed decision while
under pressure. Second, we discuss what options are currently available
in California for an elder and their family and how to navigate
the complicated process. Third, we discuss how to match the client
with the appropriate level of care while trying to match their budget.
We also discuss the pitfalls and who your allies are as well as
the predators. We then go into aspects of successful aging and juxtapose
them with various age-related afflictions. It is at this time that
we dispell many of the common myths surrounding aging. Logically,
the discussion turns to cognitive impairment. A large segment of
this course is dedicated to the topic of Dementia. The discussion
of dementia includes; definitions, diseases, difficult to manage
behaviors, the crisis of the lack of education among the health
care practitioners, the importance of an accurate diagnosis, socialized
interventions to manage behaviors, viewing the behavior s as a system
rather than an event, medications used for behavior modification,
communicating with the client, the impact on the family, Sundowner's
Syndrome, an exercise in empathy - walking a mile in the moccasins
of a person with dementia, the financial and social impact of dementia,
the value of validation therapy and a discussion about specific
behaviors to be expected as well as ways to redirect them.
Our expectation is that the student will be empowered with the
ability and knowledge to accurately and effectively educate and
counsel those who are afflicted as well as the families of those
afflicted.

COURSE MATERIALS
A trend in the field of continuing education is that the curriculum
are not free, nor are they helpful. Because our goal at HAHK is
to increase the quality of life of our collective clients, we provide
a substantial curriculum, free of charge for all students. Our thoughts
on this are simple, the idea of coming to these courses is to share
knowledge and provide education to those in the caring field. The
student then returns to their workplace, shares this knowledge with
staff, cohorts and clients, thus achieving our goal. We feel that
without a comprehensive teaching tool from which to share this knowledge,
we would not be facilitating the process. We hope you appreciate
and utilize this tool.
